GearHeads receives many requests for vehicles, which results in a full waiting list.  Wait-time on the list is determined by the number of requests and the number of available vehicles.  The process is as follows:

  1. GearHeads receives a referral from a local service agency, organization, or church. (Referral Form)
  2. The potential recipient is contacted and mailed an application.
  3. When the application is completed and returned any necessary verification is performed and, if deemed appropriate, the recipient is added to the waiting list.
  4. When a vehicle becomes available, the recipient is contacted.  Arrangements are made for the recipient to provide 6 hours of volunteer work, also known as sweat equity, with GearHeads.
  5. The recipient must be able to produce a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
  6. The title is transferred to the recipient.  The recipient is responsible for paying title and license fees.  There is no tax as the vehicle is a gift and provided at no cost.

GearHeads does not accept application to repair vehicles, pay for vehicle insurance, or help pay off a vehicle loan.  All potential recipients must show life stability and have the means available to properly insure and maintain a vehicle.  Inability to do so may result in an applicant being denied a spot on the waiting list.  All potential recipients must be referred to GearHeads by a reputable agency, organization, or church.  Applications received without a referral will be denied.  Applications from those living outside a 25-mile radius of Cedar Falls, Iowa will be denied.
